My Relationship Confessional

Ok soooo…I have a confession to make: I have never been in a relationship until this year. Yup, you read that right. I have never received any flowers/gifts, been on any dates, mini getaways, nor vacations with anyone I was romantically linked to until this year. I’ll explain.

From sophomore year to senior year of high school, I was talking to guys who liked me and that’s how far it went: text messages, seeing each other before/in between classes, and during lunch. As far as dates, I only went on one date with one guy – and that was pizza and a movie on Valentine’s Day (in 2009).

After high school, I didn’t want to be in a relationship. I just wanted to live and experience being an “adult”. I talked to guys periodically and had some “hit it and leave” experiences. (Pretty much flings) This ended when I went to college, and I was ready to be in a relationship with someone.

When I entered college, I went through the same thing I experienced in high school – school-based flings that went nowhere. I went through the meeting a guy in college, and the texting/calling stage. I had some “extracurricular” activities with one or two, but that was pretty much it. I pretty much focused on my classes and any clubs/orgs I was participating in at the time. Then, I began talking to a guy that transitioned to a situationship between 2016 and early 2023. You can read about this situationship here and here.

After I left that situationship behind, I started focusing on me again. Then, I opted to try Facebook Dating and Hinge at the time. After talking to a couple of guys on both platforms, I matched with a guy on Facebook Dating that I thought was looking for a relationship, and I paused online dating platforms. After a few months of red flags and gaslighting, I realized that everything he told me at the very beginning was a bunch of lies. You can read about the red flags here.

After I ended this situationship, I was considering being single for a while and focusing on me. Then, I decided to make my Hinge profile viewable again and tried another round of liking guys profiles hoping that they will like me back. When that didn’t work, I paused it again. Then, I guess the universe heard me and said, “Hold up! I think this woman has finally learned her lesson. Let me switch things up real quick,” because I made my profile viewable again two days later and met the man who is now my boyfriend. You can read about our first date here.

Since we’ve been together, we are experiencing things we haven’t done before. We’re planning to go on vacations next year. He’s meeting my parents soon, and I’ll be virtually meeting some of his family members sometime this year. All positive things are happening in our lives after going through hard times in our past and meeting each other when we least expected it.

So, like I mentioned above, I have never been in a relationship before this man came into my life.
